It must have been a relief to finally get to Celle where the family settled for a few months. It was a long, hard, cold trip by horse and wagon to this place...Jan 20 to March 1, 1945.
This is the house where A Louise and her family lived for about 9 months. It is also the place where their father found them after the war (He was in the army/POW during their trek and found them after his time was over.) What a joy to be united once again. Louise remembers being called out of school to go home and when they arrived there was their Dad. That afternoon they took the little wagon and walk about 4 k's back to the train station to get his suitcase. He had been a POW in TX and came back with candy bars. Of course, the kids were thrilled. They had never had such a treat! Louise says that her Dad was treated very well in TX.
A picture of the couple who took them in still hangs on the wall in this house. Louise says they were very kind to them...and a fond memory is getting a piece of bread with jam each day after school!
Is the outhouse still there?? Yup! Louise remembered this tucked away in the barn.
The farm where her Mom worked to earn money to help with expenses
Tina got to be a queen! We toured the palace in Celle...interesting and fun!
